Mumbai BDD Chawl Redevelopment Progresses With New 40-Storey Buildings
The redevelopment of the BDD Chawl in Mumbai is progressing at a rapid pace, according to Lokmat. The ambitious project involves constructing eight 40-storey buildings at Police Maidan. Among these, buildings D and E are expected to be completed and handed over to 550 families by March 2025.
Initially, possession of these units was scheduled for the end of December this year. However, due to delays in the painting and lift installations, the handover has been postponed. The redevelopment will ultimately include a total of 33 buildings, replacing the existing 121 BDD Chawl which currently houses approximately 10,000 residents.

Meanwhile, construction is underway for government buildings on the open ground of the local hostel. The lottery for building numbers 78, 79, 80, 81, 92, 59, 60, and 61 has been completed, and the relocation of affected residents is in progress.
During this redevelopment phase, many residents have been temporarily relocated to transit camps at Srinivasa Mill, Century Mill, and Bombay Dyeing Mill, while others have moved to rental accommodations. Kiran Mane, General Secretary of the All BDD Chali Tenant Rights Protection Committee, stated that these measures are crucial to ensure smooth redevelopment.
In addition to the Police Maidan project, piling work has commenced at Madkebuwa Maidan, where new residential buildings are planned for construction. The lottery for residents of buildings 18, 19, and 20 has also been held, with these buildings slated for vacation and demolition by Diwali.
At Sane Guruji Maidan, piling work for three wings is underway. Buildings numbered 108 and 109, and adjacent structures have been vacated and demolished. Similarly, buildings 93 and 90 are now vacant and will be demolished to make way for new construction.
The ongoing redevelopment aims to provide modern, high-rise housing to replace the old BDD Chawl, significantly improving living conditions for thousands of residents.
