Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor Tunnel Work Completed
In a significant development, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced on the social media platform X that the construction of a mountain tunnel along the Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed rail corridor has been successfully concluded.
This groundbreaking project, led by the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL), is set to revolutionise rail travel in India. The tunnel, a 350-meter-long horseshoe-shaped marvel, has been painstakingly crafted within the rugged terrain near Zaroli village.

Rail officials anticipate that trains operating on this corridor will attain astonishing speeds of up to 350 kilometers per hour, drastically reducing travel times between Mumbai and Ahmedabad.
The NHSRCL's visionary plan envisions the construction of an additional six tunnels along the 508-kilometer route, effectively connecting these mountainous marvels with state-of-the-art Shinkansen trainsets imported from Japan.
S P Mittal, Chief Project Manager of the Valsad section, expressed immense pride in this remarkable achievement. He remarked, "What makes us celebrate it is that it is the first tunnel in India through which a train with a speed of 350 kmph will pass." He further highlighted the intricacies of the project, emphasizing the need for precise alignment. "The biggest challenge for us was how to keep the alignment of the tunnel absolutely straight... minor alignment flaw can play spoilsport," he cautioned.
The tunnel construction, entrusted to Larsen and Toubro, harnessed the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM), a proven technique employed in various Indian rail and road projects within mountainous terrains. The endeavor spanned over a year and engaged a considerable workforce. Stringent safety measures were upheld during the blasting operations, ensuring the welfare of laborers and nearby residents. Remarkably, not a single untoward incident marred the construction process.
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed rail project, initiated in 2016 with the foundation stone laid in 2017, initially aimed for completion by December 2023. However, land acquisition complications caused delays, and the revised operationalization deadline remains pending.
According to an NHSRCL spokesperson, passengers using the bullet train service are poised to experience an extraordinary reduction in travel time. A journey covering the 508-kilometer expanse, which currently consumes approximately five hours, will be truncated to a mere two hours and seven minutes, revolutionizing intercity travel.
NHSRCL issued a statement detailing the precise location of the tunnel, situated approximately one kilometer from Zaroli village in Umbergaon taluka, Valsad. The tunnel stands as an engineering marvel, measuring 350 meters in length, 10.25 meters in height, and boasting a diameter of 12.6 meters.
Contracts have also been awarded for the construction of six other mountain tunnels in Maharashtra's Palghar district, with the NATM technique ensuring their precision and safety, marking yet another stride in India's ambitious high-speed rail journey.
