Missing Link Project Update: Mumbai-Pune Route To Get Smoother With 13 Km Cut, 25-Minute Time Save
The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has announced that the highly anticipated Missing Link project on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway will be operational by June 2025, as per a Pune Pulse report.
Officially known as the Yashwantrao Chavan Expressway (YCEW) Missing Link, this project aims to reduce traffic congestion and improve connectivity between Mumbai and Pune, making travel more efficient and safer.
Missing Link Project: Overview
The Missing Link project is divided into two main sections:
Package-I: Two eight-lane tunnels, one 1.75 kilometres and the other 8.92 kilometres long.
Package-II: Two eight-lane viaducts, one 790 metres and the other 650 metres long.
The project is designed to resolve the traffic bottlenecks at the Khalapur Toll Plaza and Khandala exit, where traffic from both the six-lane expressway and the four-lane NH-4 converge. These congested areas cause delays, especially during heavy traffic or landslides, and contribute to higher accident rates due to sharp bends and sudden speed changes in the ghat section.
Missing Link Project: Key Benefits
The Missing Link project is set to provide several advantages:
Reduced Distance: It will cut 13 kilometres off the route and eliminate the dangerous bends in the ghat section.
Time Savings: Travelers will save 20-25 minutes on their journey between Pune and Mumbai.
Improved Safety: The project will reduce congestion and sharp turns, thus lowering the risk of accidents.
Environmental Impact: It will help lower fuel consumption and reduce pollution levels.
Missing Link Project: Highlights
Asia's Tallest Cable-Stayed Bridge: A new bridge over Tiger Valley, part of the Lonavala ghat section, is being built. Although progress has faced delays, it is now expected to be completed by mid-2025.
Current Progress: While the tunnels and another bridge are 98 per cent complete, the Tiger Valley bridge is the only component behind schedule.
The Rs 6,695 crore project is expected to revolutionise the travel experience between Mumbai and Pune. Although delays in the bridge's construction have pushed back the timeline, MSRDC officials have confirmed that 85 per cent of the work is now finished. Once completed, the Missing Link will cut 6 kilometres from the Pune-Mumbai route, providing smoother, faster, and safer journeys for commuters.
This ambitious project will be a significant achievement in India's infrastructure development, though the extended timeline has raised concerns about the continued toll collection for motorists.
