Metro 9 Accident: Cement Mixer Crash Claims Life, Negligence Alleged
J Kumar Infraprojects Ltd, a prominent name in Mumbai's infrastructure projects, is under fire again after a fatal accident at an under-construction Metro 9 site in Kashi-Mira, according to the Hindustan Times (HT) report. The incident, which occurred late on Wednesday night, saw a cement mixer topple into a pit, tragically claiming the life of its operator.
The company, responsible for building the 11.38-kilometre Metro 9 stretch from Dahisar East to Mira-Bhayander, has a history of fines and allegations of poor work. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), which oversees the project, has fined the company Rs 30 lakh for negligence and is considering further action pending an investigation.
A Troubled Past
Over the last three years, J Kumar Infraprojects Ltd has been fined Rs 6.13 crore across seven instances for delays and substandard work. In March 2017, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) blacklisted the company for alleged involvement in a road scam.
Senior officials from the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) have expressed dissatisfaction with the company's work in the HT report. This year, delays attributed to the company were raised during a project review meeting with Maharashtra's Chief Minister. Despite warnings, issues persist.
Previous Failures
Metro 3 Project: The company faced criticism when a vendor locked fire safety doors over unpaid dues. This matter had to be escalated for resolution.
Santacruz-Chembur Link Road: In September 2021, a 250-metric tonne girder collapsed at Bandra Kurla Complex, narrowly avoiding casualties. The company was fined Rs 1 crore.
Bridge Defects: A newly opened bridge developed potholes within weeks, leading to another Rs 1.2-crore fine.
Metro 3 Line Leakage: Following the opening of the high-profile Metro 3 line, rainwater entered Andheri East station, causing damage. The company was fined Rs 2 crore for negligence.
Recent Delays
In 2024, J Kumar Infraprojects faced three penalties for delays on the Metro 2B project. Similar delays were reported on the 12.82-kilometre Metro 9 corridor in Andheri West, with officials blaming the company's slow pace.
Ongoing Action
The latest accident highlights recurring issues with J Kumar Infraprojects Ltd. MMRDA Commissioner Sanjay Mukherjee confirmed in the report that further actions will follow the investigation report, signalling that accountability for this tragic loss and prior lapses is being prioritised.
