Metro 3 To Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport: Temporary Walkway Planned To Cut Travel Time

A temporary walkway will soon be built to improve access between Terminal 2 (T-2) of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport and the Metro 3 underground station located outside the terminal, according to Hindustan Times (HT) report. At present, passengers face a 15-minute detour from the metro station to reach T-2 as construction of the Metro 7A station, which will link the airport to Gundavali, is ongoing.

On Tuesday, officials from various agencies, including the urban development department, Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC), Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), Maha Mumbai Metro Operations Corporation (MMMOCL), and Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL), visited the T-2 metro station to assess the feasibility of the walkway.

"The principal secretary of the urban development department, Aseem Kumar Gupta, has directed all concerned agencies to create a temporary walkway for seamless connectivity between the Metro 3 station and T-2," said an MMRC official in HT.

MMRC has requested MMRDA to construct a temporary steel bridge-cum-walkway over the Metro 7A underground station. This structure will connect the Metro 3 station with T-2, ensuring smoother passenger movement. A joint effort between field teams from MMRC and MMRDA will soon begin to implement this plan.

The temporary walkway is expected to serve as a solution until December 2025, when construction of the Metro 7A station is complete. At that time, airport authorities will establish a permanent forecourt above the two underground stations, offering direct connectivity to T-2.

To address passenger concerns in the meantime, a feeder bus service was introduced on October 15 between the Metro 3 station and T-2. However, it has seen limited use, as many passengers prefer not to wait for the bus. Current ridership at the Metro 3 station remains low, with the service primarily used by airport staff rather than travellers.
