Mahayuti's Mammoth Maharashtra Win May Leave State Assembly Without Leader Of Opposition - A First In 60 Years
The opposition alliance faced a resounding defeat at the hands of the BJP-led ruling coalition in Maharashtra.
To compound this setback, if the current figures hold steady through the final rounds of counting, no party within the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance-comprising Shiv Sena (UBT), Congress, and NCP (Sharad Pawar faction)-will qualify for the post of Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the newly constituted Maharashtra Legislative Assembly.

According to legislative rules, a party must secure at least 10 percent of the 288 seats (29 seats) to claim the position. However, none of the MVA parties currently meet this threshold.
As per the latest figures from the Election Commission at 6 pm, the Shiv Sena (UBT) has won 13 seats and is leading in 7, Congress has won 6 and is ahead in 9, while the NCP (SP) has secured 6 seats and is leading in 4.
Even though the opposition alliance collectively surpasses the required number when their totals are combined, the rules do not permit the post of Leader of the Opposition to be shared by an alliance-it must be held by a single party.
Consequently, the 15th Maharashtra Legislative Assembly may operate without a Leader of the Opposition, mirroring the 16th Lok Sabha, which lacked an LoP.
Other states such as Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Gujarat, Manipur, Nagaland, and Sikkim also function without an LoP due to the absence of opposition parties meeting the 10 percent seat requirement.
The BJP-Shiv Sena-NCP coalition has staged a remarkable comeback, retaining Maharashtra with a dominant performance following their earlier Lok Sabha setback. The ruling Mahayuti alliance has either won or is leading in 231 of the 288 assembly seats.
The BJP has so far secured 67 seats and is leading in 66, Shiv Sena has won 35 and is ahead in 22, while the NCP has bagged 28 and is leading in 13, according to the latest Election Commission data.
This outcome marks a major blow to Sharad Pawar and Uddhav Thackeray, whose parties suffered splits in the lead-up to the elections.
The Shiv Sena splintered in June 2022 after Eknath Shinde's rebellion against then-Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, resulting in the collapse of his government. Similarly, in 2023, Sharad Pawar's nephew, Ajit Pawar, broke away to join the ruling coalition, further weakening the opposition.
The splits have since led to fierce battles for political dominance between the factions.
Following the election results, which Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP leaders have described as "historic," the focus has shifted to who will be the next Chief Minister.
While many are advocating for Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to take the helm, both he and current Chief Minister Eknath Shinde have stated that a collective decision will be made by the coalition partners.
