Mumbai Lakes Water Level

Due to heavy rainfall over the weekend, the water level in Mumbai's lakes, which supply drinking water to the city, is currently at 90 per cent as of Monday. This compares to 80 per cent on the same day in 2023 and 89.78 per cent in 2022, as per NDTV.

As of 6:00 am on August 5, the total water stock in the reservoirs stands at 13,02,619 million litres, according to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). Mumbai receives 3,800 million litres per day (MLD) from seven reservoirs: Bhatsa, Upper Vaitarna, Middle Vaitarna, Tansa, Modak Sagar, Vihar, and Tulsi, located in Mumbai, Thane, and Nashik districts. The total capacity of these reservoirs is 14.47 lakh million litres.

The Middle Vaitarna dam, which supplies drinking water to Mumbai, reached its capacity on Sunday morning. It is the fifth of the seven reservoirs to do so. "Two gates of the dam have been opened by 10 centimeters, with water being discharged at a rate of 706.30 cusecs," the BMC reported on X.

The Tulsi, Vihar, Modak Sagar, and Tansa dams had already reached capacity earlier. According to the latest data, the Upper Vaitarna dam has 75.76 per cent of its water stock, while the Bhatsa dam has 88.87%.

Increased water levels due to continuous rainfall in catchment areas have led the BMC to lift the 10 per cent water cut previously imposed in the city.
