Maharashtra Weather: IMD Issues Yellow Alert As Thunderstorms, Heavy Rain Expected; Mumbai Lakes Nearly Full

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for several regions in Maharashtra as thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and varying rainfall are expected in the coming days.

The alert indicates that residents in the following areas should prepare for thunderstorms with light to moderate rainfall and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30 to 40 kilometres per hour: Palghar, Thane, Mumbai, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Ahmednagar, Pune, Satara, Nanded, Latur and Osmanabad.

In addition, the IMD warns that Sangli and Sholapur will likely experience thunderstorms with lightning and heavy rainfall. This could lead to potential disruptions and flash floods in low-lying areas.

Furthermore, isolated thunderstorms with lightning are also forecasted for Chandrapur, Gadchiroli, and Yavatmal. While the intensity of rainfall may not be as high, the risk posed by thunderstorms remains significant.

Mumbai Weather Today

Today, Mumbai will experience a partly cloudy sky, with temperatures ranging from a low of 25 to a high of 34 degrees Celsius. There is a possibility of moderate rain or thunderstorms throughout the day, so residents are advised to carry umbrellas and remain cautious while travelling.

October 16: The weather will be generally cloudy with a low of 25 and a high of 34 degrees Celsius. Light rain or drizzle is expected, making it a good idea to keep rain gear handy.

October 17: A partly cloudy sky will continue, with temperatures ranging from 25 to 35 degrees Celsius. Residents may experience one or two spells of rain or thundershowers, so it is advisable to stay alert for changing weather conditions.

October 18: Similar weather conditions will persist with a low of 26 and a high of 35 degrees Celsius. The forecast indicates a partly cloudy sky, accompanied by one or two spells of rain or thundershowers.

October 19: The temperature will remain around 26 to 34 degrees Celsius, with a partly cloudy sky and the possibility of rain or thunderstorms. Residents should prepare for potential disruptions due to changing weather.

October 20: The weather will continue with a partly cloudy sky, temperatures ranging from 26 to 34 degrees Celsius, and the likelihood of rain or thunderstorms.

Mumbai Lakes Water Level

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) announced on Monday morning that the water levels in Mumbai's seven reservoirs, which supply the city with drinking water, have reached 97.85 per cent of their total capacity. According to the BMC, the current combined water stock of these lakes stands at 14,16,194 million litres.

Mumbai receives its water supply from the following reservoirs: Upper and Middle Vaitarna, Bhatsa, Tansa, Vihar, Tulsi, and Modak Sagar. Each of these lakes plays a crucial role in ensuring the city's water needs are met.

The latest data from the BMC shows the following water levels in Mumbai's lakes:

Tansa: 97.56 per cent full.
Upper Vaitarna: 100 per cent of its water stock is available.
Modak Sagar: 92.50 per cent of the water is accessible.
Middle Vaitarna: 99.67 per cent full.
Vihar: 99.47 per cent full.
Bhatsa: 97.52 per cent full.
