Maharashtra Weather Forecast: Red Alert For Mumbai, Pune, Orange For Nasik And Other Districts Across State

Heavy rains continue to lash several cities in Maharashtra, including Mumbai, Pune, Thane, and Palghar, causing waterlogging that has led to traffic snarls and delays in flight and train operations. The Financial Capital, Mumbai, has been experiencing its second wettest July on record, with water levels in the seven lakes supplying Mumbai rising to 58 per cent of capacity.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) reported that two of Mumbai's crucial water sources, the Tansa and Vihar lakes, have started overflowing. Tansa Lake began overflowing at 4:16 PM, with three dam gates opened to release water at a rate of 3,315 cusecs. Earlier, Vihar Lake overflowed around 3:50 AM. Additionally, the city's water stock has risen to 58% of total capacity, bringing relief after June's below-average rainfall.

The Mumbai police have issued an advisory urging residents to remain indoors until 8:30 am tomorrow, following a heavy rain forecast by the weather office. This advisory comes after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) declared a red alert for Mumbai.

"IMD has declared a red alert for Mumbai until 8:30 am tomorrow. We request all Mumbaikars to stay indoors unless it's essential. Please stay safe. Dial 100 or 112 in case of emergencies," the Mumbai Police announced in a post on X.

Today, heavy rain led to the cancellation of eleven flights and the diversion of ten others to nearby airports.

Rainfall recorded over the last 24 hours until 8:30 am today was 44 mm in Mumbai city, 90 mm in the eastern suburbs, and 89 mm in the western suburbs.

Chief Minister Eknath Shinde assessed the situation, instructing the Raigad collector to assist all flood-affected residents.

Traffic was halted at Tamhini Ghat on the Raigad-Pune route due to a landslide.

"There is water on the roads and in people's houses in Pune. There is heavy rain at Khadakwasla Dam and in the catchment area. The District Collector, Municipal Commissioner, and Police Commissioner are on alert," Shinde told ANI.

Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and its state counterpart have been deployed, while army airlifting teams have been placed on standby.

IMD Reports Moderate to Heavy Rainfall in Pune

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported moderate to heavy rainfall in various parts of Pune city from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm today. The rainfall measurements are as follows:

Shivajinagar: 51.3 mm
Pashan: 56.2 mm
Lohegaon: 61.2 mm
Chinchwad: 68.0 mm
Lavale: 74.5 mm
Magarpatta: 14.0 mm
NDA: 48.0 mm

Forecast & Warning for Tomorrow (Friday)

The IMD has issued a forecast for overcast skies with incessant heavy (64.5-115.4 mm) to very heavy (115.6-204.4 mm) rainfall in Pune. Additionally, isolated places in Ghat areas may experience extremely heavy rainfall (≥204.5 mm).

Due to the relentless downpour, the district administration has announced the closure of all schools and colleges in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad for tomorrow (July 26).

Orange alert

A few other districts, including Palghar, Thane, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Nashik, Pune, and Kolhapur, are given an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall.
