Several feared dead and 13 passengers were injured after falling from a moving train at Thane's railway station on Monday. The reason for the accident is believed to be an excessive crowd on the train.

"The railway administration and police have reached the spot. The injured are being taken immediately to the nearest hospital. Investigation into the accident has begun. Local services have also been affected by the incident," the Central Railways said in a statement. The train was on its way to Thane's Kasara area from Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus.

While media reports claim that five people have been killed in the incident, the police department has said that four people are dead in the mishap.

Talking about the Mumbra railway mishap, CPRO, Central Railway, Swapnil Dhanraj Nila said that eight people travelling on local trains from Mumbra to Diva fell down and the guard of a Kasara-bound local train reported this incident. The injured people have been rushed to the hospital for treatment.

He said, "This incident happened between Mumbra-Diva railway stations on the down/fast Line. People travelling on the footboard on a local train from Kasara and similarly those on a train going towards CSMT, collided with each other and fell."

He clarified that there was no train collision. He explained, "In this incident, the passengers travelling on footboards in trains in opposite directions got entangled. This is one of the suspected reasons for the incident, as informed by a passenger. The distance between two trains is 1.5-2 meters, but on curves, a slight tilt happens, and this could be an additional reason for the incident."

The CPRO adds that the first information given by the guard of the Kasara-bound local train was that six passengers were seen lying injured on the down-through track. "Once the ambulances reached the spot, we found out that there were eight passengers. We have seen that sometimes passengers travel standing on the footboard even when there is space in the train. There is CCTV footage available on a route or a section," he explains.

The unconfirmed visuals doing rounds on social media sites show the injured people lying on the track.

On May 2, two people were killed in separate incidents on a running train near Mumbra station after falling from the train, reportedly due to overcrowding.
