Maharashtra Government Rolls Out ₹1 Crop Insurance For Farmers Facing Natural Calamities
Climate change and natural calamities have caused crop losses to farmers for a long time. To help farmers, the Maharashtra government has started an insurance scheme for ₹1. The government, led by Eknath Shinde, aims to aid farmers who lose their crops due to natural disasters.
Last year, heavy crop losses occurred in Maharashtra due to unpredictable weather. This led the government to take this step. Climate change has caused untimely rainfall, hailstorms, flooding, and droughts. These events destroy crops and put farmers in financial trouble.

To solve this issue, Maharashtra has introduced crop insurance at ₹1. This initiative will benefit small farmers who struggle with high insurance premiums. Deputy Chief Minister and Finance Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that 2% interest was charged earlier. Now, the government plans to provide crop insurance for just ₹1.
The government has allotted several crore rupees for this initiative. This is part of the state's larger efforts to support farmers and reduce financial risks from climate change. The Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana is already in place in India to compensate farmers for crop losses due to natural disasters.
Under this scheme, farmers pay an insurance premium for crop protection. In return, insurance companies and the central and state governments provide partial compensation if crops are damaged. However, the new scheme by Maharashtra offers a state-level solution with minimal costs.
This new insurance initiative is especially helpful for those with small landholdings or those who cannot afford high premiums. Under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana, the insurance premium for Rabi crops is 1.5%, for Kharif crops it is 2%, and for horticulture crops, it is 5%. With the new scheme introduced by Maharashtra, the government aims to reduce this burden on farmers.
