Maharashtra Election Results 2024: Stage Set For Counting
The political atmosphere in Maharashtra is charged as the state awaits the results of a fiercely contested election. The outcome, expected tomorrow, holds significant implications for the region's political landscape. Leaders from both the ruling Mahayuti alliance and the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) are optimistic about their chances, especially after recent splits within their ranks.
Anticipated Election Results
Vote counting is set to begin at 8 am, with initial trends anticipated shortly thereafter. The Mahayuti coalition, which includes BJP, Shiv Sena, and NCP, is up against the MVA alliance comprising Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT), and NCP (SP). Voter turnout reached 66.05%, surpassing the 61% recorded in the 2019 Assembly elections. Both sides interpret this increase as a sign of growing support.

Seat Distribution and Alliances
In terms of seat allocation, BJP led Mahayuti with 148 seats, followed by Shiv Sena with 80 and NCP with 52. On the MVA side, Congress contested 102 seats while Shiv Sena (UBT) took on 96 and NCP (SP) went for 86. The Samajwadi Party and smaller allies also contested a few seats.
Leaders' Confidence
Prominent figures from both alliances have expressed confidence in securing victory. Priyanka Chaturvedi of Shiv Sena (UBT) predicted a decisive win for MVA while criticising current government policies. Prataprao Jadhav, Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, expects Mahayuti to win over 200 seats.
Exit Polls and Predictions
Exit polls largely favour Mahayuti but suggest a tight race. BJP's general secretary Tarun Chugh is confident of defeating the opposition despite their EVM complaints. He believes voters will reject Congress-led alliances. Meanwhile, Sanjay Raut of Shiv Sena (UBT) anticipates MVA securing between 160-165 seats and has taken measures to protect candidates from undue pressure.
Significance of Recent Splits
This election is crucial due to recent divisions within NCP and Shiv Sena that challenge party legacies and leaderships. The results will reflect on Congress's performance too, especially after its setback in Haryana assembly polls earlier this year.
S Chockalingam, Maharashtra's Chief Electoral Officer, commended efforts to boost voter participation and ensure smooth elections. Nearly six lakh officers facilitated voting under meticulous planning by the Election Commission of India.
