Maharashtra Assembly Election 2024: MVA Leads In Lok Sabha, But Can Mahayuti Fight Back?
In the recent Lok Sabha elections, the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance of Opposition parties achieved a significant victory, winning 30 out of the 48 Lok Sabha seats in Maharashtra. However, data from the Assembly segments indicates that the elections may be very close, with winning margins of less than 5,000 votes in 31 Assembly segments, as reported by Indian Express.
An analysis of the voting trends reveals that the MVA led in 158 Assembly segments, surpassing the majority mark of 145 in the 288-member Assembly. Meanwhile, the ruling Mahayuti alliance is also a strong contender, leading in 125 segments. While there is a 33-seat gap between the two alliances, the 31 closely contested constituencies-from Andheri West and Malad West in Mumbai to Dahanu in Palghar and Majalgaon in Beed-could swing the outcome in favour of either side. In fact, the seats with narrow margins are fairly evenly split, with the MVA securing leads in 16 segments and the Mahayuti not far behind with leads in 15.

It is important to note that voting patterns in Lok Sabha and Assembly elections often differ. However, the Lok Sabha polls provide the closest comparison, especially given the shifts in the political landscape following the splits in the Shiv Sena and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) in 2022 and 2023, respectively. The MVA comprises the Congress, Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray), and NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar), while the Mahayuti includes the BJP along with its allies Shiv Sena and NCP.
Uddhav Thackeray and Sharad Pawar are looking to benefit from the sympathy generated by the splits, as the Congress seems to have regained its position in the state. On the other hand, the Mahayuti is gaining momentum following a recent win in Haryana and is heavily relying on the benefits announced by the state government in recent weeks.
