Maha Health Department Issues HMPV Guidelines Amid Rising Cases In China: Here's What You Need To Know
The state health department, in light of recent developments in China, has issued guidelines urging the public to adopt preventive measures against Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV). These measures include covering the mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing, regular handwashing with soap, and staying away from public gatherings if experiencing symptoms. This virus, which can cause symptoms similar to a cold, particularly threatens young children, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems.
Officials from the health department have reassured the public, stating there is no immediate cause for alarm regarding the HMPV situation as it unfolds in China. Continuous monitoring is underway, in collaboration with the National Centre for Disease Control and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. This comes amidst the Union health ministry's confirmation of keeping a close watch on the situation, with guidance from the World Health Organization.

Dr Lancelot Pinto, a pulmonologist from PD Hinduja Hospital, highlighted in the Times Of India (TOI) report that detecting HMPV cases in India is not unusual. Testing for the virus is typically reserved for severe cases due to the high costs involved, ranging from Rs 15,000 to Rs 20,000. Despite the recent spike in HMPV cases in China, data analysis by the state health department shows no increase in respiratory infection cases in December 2024 compared to the previous year.

"HMPV is not as contagious as COVID-19, but it's crucial for public health that people exercise caution when ill to safeguard others. It's essential to instil these habits in children from an early age," said Dr Pinto, as per the TOI report.
