Jogeshwari Gang Rape Case: Schoolgirl Brutally Assaulted; 5 Men Arrested

In recent weeks, the state has seen a troubling rise in violent crimes, leaving communities on edge. Just as the shocking case of atrocities at Pune's Swargate bus stand remains fresh in people's minds, another horrifying incident has come to light in Mumbai, a city often considered relatively safe.

A 12-year-old schoolgirl was brutally gang-raped in Jogeshwari, sending shockwaves across the city. The incident, which occurred 11 days ago, has raised serious questions about the safety of women and girls in Mumbai.

Jogeshwari Gang Rape Case

The victim, who lives with her uncle in Jogeshwari, had returned home late from school on February 24. After an argument with her uncle, she left the house in anger and headed to Jogeshwari station. There, she met a boy who took her to Bandra Band Stand. Later, she encountered five more men who lured her to Marine Drive and then to Sanjay Nagar, where the horrific crime took place.

The next morning, the girl managed to escape when the accused left for work. She was found wandering near Dadar railway station, where railway police noticed her distressed state. Upon questioning, she revealed the chilling details of the assault. The police immediately informed their counterparts in Jogeshwari, where the girl's uncle had already filed a missing person's complaint.

All five accused-identified as Jamal, Aftab, Mahfuz, Hassan, and Jafar-have been arrested. They work as air conditioning mechanics and now face charges under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

This case has reignited concerns about the safety of women and girls in Mumbai, a city that prides itself on being progressive and secure. Authorities are under pressure to ensure such incidents are prevented in the future, while communities are left grappling with fear and anger.

As investigations continue, the focus remains on delivering justice for the young victim and addressing the broader issue of rising atrocities in the state.
