"Is This World-Class?" Viral Video Shows Poor Patchwork On Mumbai Coastal Road

A viral video has revealed poor-quality patchwork on the Mumbai Coastal Road project, leading to widespread criticism from Mumbaikars. The footage, recorded from a car's dashboard, shows uneven and poorly executed road repairs on the highly anticipated infrastructure project, which is being developed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

The video was shared by a social media user named Eternal Drift on platform X, formerly known as Twitter. Expressing disappointment, the user wrote, "This is beyond disappointing. Mumbai's ₹14,000 crore Coastal Road already looks like patchwork. I feel betrayed-this was supposed to be world-class infrastructure. L&T and BMC must be held accountable. Is this what we paid for?"

According to the post, the video was reportedly recorded on February 18, though no official confirmation has been made regarding the exact date. The clip quickly gained attention online, with netizens expressing frustration over the quality of the work. Many questioned the use of public funds and criticised the authorities for what they described as substandard construction.

Several users pointed out that Mumbai has long struggled with poor road conditions, despite large-scale infrastructure investments. Some also warned that the real challenge for the Coastal Road would come during the monsoon, as weak patchwork might not withstand heavy rainfall. The user commented, " Monsoon toh aane do! Fir dekho aur bhot sara patchwork." On the same line, one posted, "Well resurfacing won't take much time and even cost. I assume they are waiting for monsoons to understand the real damage. Post monsoon they may resurface it as they would understand water draining pattern more clearly."

Another user said, "One of India's most high-profile roads shows it's poor workmanship in less than an year."

The BMC has not yet responded to the criticism. However, as concerns grow over the durability of the project, citizens continue to demand accountability from the authorities and contractors involved.
