'House Arrest' Controversy: Ajaz Khan, Ullu OTT Founder Summoned By Mumbai Police

Ajaz Khan, a former contestant on 'Bigg Boss', has found himself embroiled in yet another controversy-this time over his involvement as the host of a reality programme many are branding as one of the most unsettling ever streamed in India.

The show, titled 'House Arrest', is available on the OTT platform Ullu, which has often come under fire for pushing the envelope in terms of adult content.

Initially promoted as a typical "lock-in" reality drama, the series drew widespread criticism after a viral video clip surfaced online showing contestants participating in scenes that were widely condemned as degrading, inappropriate, and exploitative.

Khan-already a controversial figure due to past incidents ranging from communal remarks to alleged drug offences-is now being accused of encouraging vulgar conduct on-screen. Here's a closer look at the controversy and why it's drawing attention.

What is 'House Arrest'?

Streaming on the Ullu app, 'House Arrest' follows a 'Bigg Boss'-style format in which contestants are confined to a luxurious villa and subjected to emotionally and physically intense tasks. The show promises high-voltage drama, romantic twists, and heated disputes.

Featured participants include Aabha Paul, Humera Shaikh, Sarika Salunkhe, Muskaan Agarwal, and Rahul Bhoj.

What's the row about?

The scandal erupted after a clip from the show went viral, prompting strong public backlash. In the video, a female contestant admitted to lacking knowledge about sexual matters.

Rather than handling the moment with discretion, Khan allegedly urged other housemates to demonstrate sexual positions on camera. The contestant appeared visibly distressed, while some female participants reportedly removed their undergarments amid cheering and jeering.

Critics described the episode as exploitative, humiliating, and deeply inappropriate.
Ajaz Khan's Role

Ajaz Khan, referring to himself as the "daddy of the house", has come under intense scrutiny for his role in the incident. Rather than enforcing boundaries or respecting participants' consent, Khan allegedly encouraged the indecent display, prompting allegations of promoting vulgarity under the pretence of entertainment.

This latest controversy only adds to the long list of legal and social issues already associated with him.

Growing concerns over Ullu, ALTBalaji etc

Streaming services such as Ullu and ALTBalaji have often been criticised for broadcasting explicit content. In 2023, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting banned 18 OTT platforms for pornographic material-but both Ullu and ALTBalaji were not included on that list.

ALTBalaji, founded by Ekta Kapoor, has faced multiple complaints for shows like Gandii Baat and XXX, which critics say exploit taboo topics while falsely claiming to be progressive or feminist. Legal charges have been filed under various sections of the IPC, IT Act, and POCSO Act, especially regarding content involving minors.

Shiv Sena MP Priyanka Chaturvedi has raised this issue in parliamentary panels, and BJP MP Nishikant Dubey has promised action.

Social media fury

The reaction on social media was swift and fierce. Viewers labelled the show "disturbing", "degrading", and "unbearable".

Many expressed disbelief that such content could pass regulatory approval, demanding greater oversight and accountability for OTT content.
OTT Regulations in India

Currently, OTT platforms in India are governed by the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021. These require age ratings, content warnings, and a three-tier self-regulation framework. However, the government is now considering rules to allow pre-release content checks.

Platforms must comply with various laws, including the POCSO Act, the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.
Other Problematic Shows

OTT series like 'Gandii Baat' and 'XXX Season 2' have faced backlash for explicit or controversial storylines-such as depictions of incest, scenes involving minors, or disrespect towards soldiers' families.

Netflix's 'Rana Naidu' also drew criticism for its profanity-laden script, especially from fans of actor Venkatesh, who were shocked by the show's bold content.
