Goregaon-Borivli Harbour Line: Phase 1 Stretch To Open By 2026-27, Says Western Railway

The Western Railway (WR) has begun work on the highly anticipated Goregaon-Borivli harbour line project, which will include an elevated station at Malad, according to a Midday report. Spanning eight kilometres, this new corridor aims to boost connectivity in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and is scheduled for completion by March 2027.

Goregaon-Borivli Harbour Line Project Details

The project will add two more lines, extending the existing harbour line, and is divided into two phases. Phase 1 involves a two-kilometre stretch from Goregaon to Malad, set to open by 2026-27. Phase 2, a five-kilometre extension from Malad to Borivli, is expected to be completed by 2027-28.

An elevated section near Malad will require 2,731 square metres of land, of which 2,535 square metres is private property and 196 sqm is owned by the BMC. Around 16 three-storey railway buildings, affecting 520 residents will be demolished to make way for the line.

Goregaon-Borivli Harbour Line: Infrastructure Requirements

The project will involve constructing one major bridge and upgrading 16 minor bridges along the stretch. It is estimated to cost Rs 825 crore and forms part of the Mumbai Urban Transport Project III.

Goregaon-Borivli Harbour Line: Current Status

Key updates on the project include:

Land Acquisition: Proposals for acquiring private and government land have been submitted to the Mumbai Suburban District Collector and the BMC.

Surveys: A joint measurement survey (JMR) for land acquisition is ongoing. A baseline socio-economic survey (BSES) conducted in February 2024 identified 520 project-affected residents, with details submitted to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) in October 2024.

Tree Cutting: Proposals for cutting or transplanting trees have been sent to the relevant authorities.

Once completed, this harbour line extension promises to enhance commuter convenience and reduce congestion on the Western Railway network.
