French President Macron Makes Late Night Visit to CST Railway Station During Mumbai Tour

French President Emmanuel Macron combined diplomacy, public outreach and heritage during his Mumbai visit on 17 February 2026, as visuals of his early morning jog at Marine Drive and late night walk at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus went viral.

The Mumbai leg formed part of Macron's broader India tour focused on defence cooperation, technology partnerships and global coordination. While formal meetings dominated the schedule, informal public appearances added a different dimension to the visit.

Defence and technology take centre stage

Speaking at the India France Innovation Forum in Mumbai, Macron emphasised deepening cooperation in defence and advanced technology.

"In the field of defence, France is a steadfast partner of Make in India. Our high level cooperation allows us to develop next generation engines, multi role helicopters, advanced combat aircraft and submarines," he said.

Macron described India and France as "two great nations choosing each other on land, at sea and in the sky, not by default but by conviction". He added that innovation must also improve everyday life, calling for partnerships that make societies healthier and safer.

The discussions follow continued engagement under the India France strategic partnership, which spans defence manufacturing, clean energy, space and emerging technologies.

Invitation to G7 Summit

During the visit, Macron formally invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the 52nd G7 Summit, which France will host in 2026 in Evian.

Calling 2026 a year of acceleration for bilateral ties, Macron said France and India would work towards concrete areas of agreement on key global issues before the Evian summit. Officials indicated that climate action, digital governance, security and youth innovation would feature prominently.

Modi highlights startups and long term cooperation

Following bilateral talks, Modi said the partnership was aimed at global stability and progress.

"We discussed cooperation in industry, defence, clean energy, space and emerging technologies," he wrote on X.

Modi also stressed closer collaboration between startup ecosystems and MSMEs, along with stronger research exchanges and joint innovation centres. Officials noted that Mumbai's position as a financial and technology hub made it a suitable venue for such discussions.

Marine Drive jog draws attention

Earlier in the day, Macron surprised morning walkers by jogging along Marine Drive. Dressed in a navy blue T shirt and sunglasses, the French President maintained a steady pace along the seafront with limited visible barricading.

The visuals quickly circulated on social media, becoming one of the most shared moments of the visit.

Responding to queries, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the jog reflected a broader message on youth and health.

"Mumbai hosts several marathons. This kind of public exposure centred around health conveys a very good message to the youth of India and across the world," Jaiswal said.

Late night walk at CST

Later that night, Macron visited Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, one of Mumbai's designated heritage buildings.

Clips showed the French President walking through the illuminated station complex, observing its Victorian era architecture and detailed stonework. Railway officials guided the brief tour while security personnel maintained a perimeter.

The heritage stop added a cultural layer to a day otherwise dominated by strategic and economic discussions.
