Seven individuals lost their lives, and three others sustained severe injuries following a collision between two vehicles on the Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway, also known as the Samruddhi Expressway, in Maharashtra's Jalna district on Friday night, according to a PTI report citing police sources.

The tragic incident occurred around 11 p.m. near Kadvanchi village when a multi-utility vehicle (MUV) travelling from Nagpur to Mumbai collided head-on with a car travelling in the opposite direction.

Fatal Collision On Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway

Six people were pronounced dead at the scene, while another victim succumbed to injuries at the hospital later on. "A multi-utility vehicle (MUV) heading from Nagpur to Mumbai collided head-on with a car travelling in the opposite direction, resulting in the deaths of six individuals on the spot. One more person later succumbed to injuries at the hospital," a police official stated.

The impact of the collision was so forceful that it caused the MUV to breach the crash barrier and veer off the left side of the road, as reported by PTI. Residents and authorities swiftly responded to aid those trapped in the severely damaged vehicles.

Dr Umesh Jadhav, a medical officer at the Government District Hospital in Jalna, confirmed that six bodies had been brought to the hospital for post-mortem examinations. Meanwhile, three injured individuals are receiving treatment at Jalna's hospital, with one critically injured person who was transferred to the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district later succumbing to injuries.

The deceased include three individuals from Mumbai and three from Buldhana district. One person transferred to Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar remains unidentified, while the three injured are from Mumbai.

The Samruddhi Expressway, spanning 701 kilometres and linking Mumbai to Nagpur, is a crucial six-lane highway in Maharashtra. The first phase of the expressway, connecting Nagpur to Shirdi, was inaugurated in December 2022.

According to officials, road hypnosis has been identified as a contributing factor in accidents on the Samruddhi Expressway. This phenomenon, also known as driving hypnosis, occurs when a driver becomes mentally detached while driving, often with no memory of specific events during that time.
