Fadnavis’ Vision Brings Samruddhi Expressway To Life, Connecting Maharashtra’s Underserved Regions To Mumbai
For any region aspiring for a true economic and social uplift, robust infrastructure is vital. This insight paved the way for Maharashtra's longest expressway-a transformative vision turned reality.
The 'Hindu Hrudaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg,' a 701-km corridor linking Mumbai and Nagpur, owes much of its momentum to Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis.

Few realise that the seeds of this ambitious project were planted years ago during Fadnavis's tenure as Nagpur's Mayor. Today, his steadfast commitment has been instrumental in driving this project toward completion, promising new growth avenues across Maharashtra.
The ambitious Samruddhi Expressway project is nearing its final phase. Fadnavis and his team have consistently championed this transformative project from its announcement in 2015, with the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) designated as the executing agency.
By 2019, the project gained significant momentum, with all formalities, including land acquisition and funding, swiftly completed, setting the stage for construction. The first 520-km phase opened on December 11, 2022, connecting Nagpur to Shirdi and cutting down travel time significantly. The second phase, covering an additional 80 km between Shirdi and Igatpuri, was inaugurated in May 2023.
The final stretch, linking Igatpuri to Mumbai, will complete the 701-km route, reducing travel between Nagpur and Mumbai to about eight hours.
The expressway, dotted with six tunnels, includes the impressive 7.7-km twin tunnel at Kasara Ghat, the longest highway tunnel in Maharashtra. Beyond its engineering marvels, the route traverses scenic landscapes, including three wildlife sanctuaries, 35 eco-sensitive zones and the Wardha river via a 310-meter bridge.
Strategically designed, the expressway cuts across 10 key districts and indirectly connects another 14, enhancing economic connectivity across Maharashtra. The road's alignment also connects with major hubs like the Jawaharlal Nehru Port in Mumbai and the upcoming Navi Mumbai airport. Its 24 interchanges link industrial centers, making it an economic corridor that is expected to stimulate growth and open opportunities for the state.
Unlike conventional highways, this project incorporates township development at intervals of 30-40 km along the route, with 18 townships featuring educational, healthcare and recreational facilities aimed at fostering community growth and reducing rural-urban disparity.
Fadnavis has been instrumental in steering the project through various challenges, including land acquisition and environmental clearances. His 'war room' approach helped streamline approvals and secure funding through five public agencies, collectively raising Rs. 5,000 crore. Securitising toll rights on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway provided an additional Rs. 9,000 crore, ensuring robust financial support for the project.
Additional connectors are now underway to strengthen the expressway's reach. The 53-km Pune-Shirur Road and the 180-km Jalna-Nanded Expressway will enhance connectivity to major districts, with the Jalna-Nanded route offering direct access to Mumbai and JNPT while featuring a future high-speed rail corridor.
Expected to cost Rs. 9,565 crore, the Pune-Shirur development, overseen by the Maharashtra State Infrastructure Development Corporation (MSIDC), will link Pune with key regions through multiple entry and exit points, further boosting economic integration.
With its extensive infrastructure and strategic township model, the Samruddhi Expressway reflects Fadnavis' vision of a connected and economically empowered Maharashtra. As the project nears completion, it stands poised to reshape the state's landscape, integrating urban and rural areas into a unified economic network.
