ECI Rejects Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Match-Fixing’ Allegations Over Maharashtra Polls

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has harshly reprimanded Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's latest charges about the 2024 Maharashtra assembly elections, calling them false and a "affront to the rule of law." The poll body further stated that a full answer to such concerns was been posted on its website on December 24, 2024.

"Unsubstantiated allegations raised against the Electoral Rolls of Maharashtra are an affront to the rule of law," the Commission stated. "The Election Commission had brought out all these facts in its reply to the INC on 24th December 2024 itself, which is available on the ECI's website. It appears that all these facts are being completely ignored while raising such issues again and again."

ECI Rejects Rahul Gandhi s Match-Fixing Allegations Over Maharashtra Polls

The ECI warned that spreading misinformation is not only disrespectful to legal institutions but also harms the morale of election staff and party representatives. "Any misinformation being spread, by anyone, is not only a sign of disrespect towards the Law, but also brings disrepute to the thousands of representatives appointed by their political party and demotivates lakhs of election staff who work untiringly and transparently during elections. After any unfavourable verdict by the voters, trying to defame the Election Commission by saying that it is compromised, is completely absurd," it added.

ECI Hits Back at Gandhi's Rigging Allegations

The controversy follows Rahul Gandhi's recent remarks in which he alleged that the Maharashtra elections were part of a "blueprint for rigging democracy," and that similar tactics would be used in upcoming elections in Bihar and other states where the BJP faces strong opposition.

Calling such practices a "poison" for democracy, Gandhi said that while a side that cheats may win, it ultimately damages institutions and erodes public trust. In a post on X, Gandhi outlined what he described as a pattern of manipulation: fake voters being added to the rolls, inflated voter turnout figures, bogus voting being facilitated, and evidence being concealed afterward.

Reacting to these comments, ECI sources told PTI that Gandhi's remarks were "absurd" and reiterated that no one should malign the Election Commission simply because of an unfavorable election outcome. They emphasized that spreading such misinformation only serves to damage the credibility of the electoral process and demotivate the large workforce that ensures fair and transparent elections.
