'Don't Venture Out Unless Necessary': Eknath Shinde As Heavy Rain Batters Mumbai
Heavy overnight rain has left Mumbai grappling with severe waterlogging, prompting Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde to urge residents to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary.
He also instructed the Police Commissioner to restrict access to beaches for safety reasons.

Several areas in Mumbai recorded 300 mm of rainfall between 1-7 am today, causing massive disruptions. Streets are flooded, and both train and flight services have been affected. The rain continues intermittently after a brief pause.
Impact on Transportation
Railway tracks were submerged in multiple locations, necessitating extensive water pumping by the Railways, NDRF, and civic officials.
"461 motor pumps of the municipal corporation and 200 pumps of the Railways are running. I have been in touch with all the departments since morning. Central and Harbour rail line services have started," said Shinde.
Over 50 flights have been cancelled due to the weather conditions. Airlines have advised passengers to check their flight status before heading to the airport to avoid inconvenience.
Emergency Measures
The CM highlighted that seven new pumping stations are under construction in Mumbai to improve drainage. Additionally, he mentioned that civic officials are actively working in waterlogged areas, schools have been closed, and all agencies are on high alert to prevent any accidents.
"The city witnessed heavy downpour in the last 24 hours with the Met department issuing an orange alert for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, and the Konkan Belt," Shinde noted. An orange alert indicates a need for preparedness amid forecasts of heavy rain.
Rescue Operations
The Army, Navy, and Air Force have been placed on standby as part of precautionary measures.
"I took stock of the entire state. There is an orange alert in coastal areas. Army, Navy, and Air Force have been asked to stay on alert," said Shinde.
Mumbai's unique micro-tunneling system is aiding in draining excess water from flooded streets. This technology is exclusive to Mumbai and has proven beneficial during such heavy rains.
Public Safety
Videos circulating online show locals navigating through waist-deep waters across various parts of the city. Passengers at Dombivli station were seen waiting for trains on submerged tracks.
The CM assured that continuous efforts are being made by civic and rescue teams to manage the situation effectively. He stressed that public cooperation is crucial in these tough times.
The relentless rain over the past day has massively impacted daily life in Mumbai. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely while urging residents to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel.
