Dharavi Redevelopment: MMRDA To Build Integrated Multimodal Transport Hub

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has officially been designated as the nodal agency to develop a world-class Multimodal Transport Hub (MMTH) in Dharavi. This move is part of the larger Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP) and was formalized through a government resolution issued on June 18, 2025, following a high-level meeting chaired by Maharashtra's Deputy Chief Minister, Eknath Shinde.

Key Features and Goals of the Dharavi MMTH

Integrated Transit System:
The MMTH is envisioned as a comprehensive interchange that will integrate multiple modes of public transport-including metro lines, suburban rail, bus services, and non-motorised transport like walking and cycling. The primary objective is to provide seamless, efficient connectivity for thousands of commuters in one of Mumbai's most crowded and underserved regions.

Dharavi Redevelopment MMRDA To Build Integrated Multimodal Transport Hub

Strategically Positioned:
The hub will be centrally located to offer easy access to both Sion station on the Central Railway and Mahim station on the Western Railway. These stations are situated on either side of the 259-hectare Dharavi redevelopment area, making the location ideal for intermodal transport.

Enhanced Metro Access:
The transport network will include the under-construction Metro Line 3 (Colaba-Bandra-Seepz) and a proposed extension of Metro Line 11 (Wadala-CSMT). Authorities are also considering realigning Line 11 to pass through Dharavi, allowing the creation of a major east-west and north-south metro interchange. Additionally, plans are under discussion to build a second metro station within Dharavi to further improve accessibility.

Upgraded Bus Infrastructure:
A modern depot for BEST buses will be developed as part of the hub. Around 12 acres currently occupied by existing depots in Sion East will be repurposed for the MMTH, enhancing the efficiency and capacity of bus transport in the area.

Improved Last-Mile Connectivity:
The hub will support infrastructure for feeder bus services, pedestrian pathways, and cycling lanes. This focus on non-motorised transport aims to promote safe, accessible last-mile options for residents and commuters.

Transit-Oriented Urban Development:
The MMTH is a central element in the broader vision of creating a transit-oriented urban environment in Dharavi. Plans include a fine-grained street network, open public spaces, and better accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists. The hub is intended to link residential zones, workplaces, and public amenities with efficient and sustainable transport.

Planning and Execution:
MMRDA will work closely with the Dharavi Redevelopment Authority and other key transport agencies to prepare a detailed layout and implementation roadmap. Beyond improving mobility, the MMTH is expected to enhance the overall quality of life for Dharavi residents. It forms a crucial part of the Rs 95,790 crore redevelopment plan aimed at transforming Dharavi into a well-connected, inclusive, and future-ready urban zone.
