Devendra Fadnavis To Be Maharashtra CM For Next 5 Years, Eknath Shinde Likely To Be Deputy CM: Report
Following a significant victory in the Maharashtra assembly elections, discussions about the Chief Minister's position have intensified. On Tuesday morning, Eknath Shinde resigned as Chief Minister, potentially clearing the path for Devendra Fadnavis to assume the role. Shinde submitted his resignation to Governor CP Radhakrishnan at Raj Bhavan in Mumbai and was asked to continue as caretaker CM until a new leader is appointed.
The BJP-led Mahayuti coalition secured a decisive win, capturing 235 out of 288 seats in the assembly. The BJP itself won 132 seats, while its allies Shiv Sena and NCP claimed 57 and 41 seats, respectively. Several smaller parties also form part of this coalition. This victory has set the stage for potential changes in leadership roles within the state government.

Potential Leadership Scenarios
Two main scenarios are being considered for leadership roles. In one scenario, Eknath Shinde could serve as Deputy Chief Minister under Devendra Fadnavis for a full five-year term without any rotation after two and a half years. This mirrors Fadnavis's previous role as Deputy CM for two and a half years. Shinde might also be assigned the Ministry of Urban Development or PWD, which oversees significant projects like Samridhi Mahamarg.
In another possible scenario, close associates of Eknath Shinde such as Uday Samant, Shambhuraje Desai, or Deepak Kesarkar might be appointed as Deputy Chief Minister. Meanwhile, there is speculation that Shinde could transition to a role in New Delhi in the future. These potential changes reflect ongoing strategic planning within the coalition.
Key Ministry Assignments
The Home Ministry is expected to remain with the BJP, with Devendra Fadnavis likely taking charge of it. Additionally, Ajit Pawar is speculated to be given the Finance Ministry while continuing as Deputy CM. These assignments are part of broader discussions on how to distribute key portfolios among coalition members effectively.
The political landscape in Maharashtra is poised for change following these election results. The decisions made regarding leadership roles will significantly impact governance and policy implementation in the state over the coming years.
