Devendra Fadnavis Faces Major Hurdles As BJP Prepares For Maharashtra Assembly Elections

Devendra Fadnavis, the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra and a key figure in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), is currently facing significant challenges as he prepares for the upcoming Assembly elections.

Historically regarded as the architect behind the BJP's remarkable victory in the 2014 Assembly polls, Fadnavis is now under intense scrutiny following recent political developments and internal party discord.

Devendra Fadnavis Faces Major Hurdles, Here's Why

The BJP's disappointing performance in the recent Lok Sabha elections in Maharashtra, coupled with the impending Assembly elections, has placed Fadnavis back in the spotlight. His role as the party's strategic leader is being scrutinized amid rising opposition from Maratha quota activist Manoj Jarange-Patil and internal dissent within the party, as reported by Indian Express.

Jarange-Patil's agitation for Maratha reservation has intensified, targeting Fadnavis while sparing Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, both Marathas. The agitation, which began in September of the previous year, has led to widespread violence and unrest. It is believed that this unrest contributed to the BJP's poor showing in the recent Lok Sabha elections, where the party's seat count dropped significantly from 23 in 2019 to just nine.

In response to the Maratha quota agitation, the BJP has emphasized Fadnavis' previous efforts to secure reservations for the Maratha community under the Socially and Educationally Backward Classes (SEBC) Act. Despite the Act being struck down by the Supreme Court in May 2021, the party is highlighting Fadnavis' contributions to the community's empowerment as a counter-narrative, as reported by Indian Express.

Internal party dynamics have also been affected by Fadnavis' recent visit to Delhi. Speculations have arisen that his visit might signal a possible shift to a national role, such as becoming the BJP's national president. This has stirred concerns within the party regarding potential leadership changes and has led to confusion among the cadre.

Chandrashekhar Bawankule, the Maharashtra BJP chief, has expressed caution regarding Fadnavis' role, suggesting that his presence is crucial for the state's electoral prospects. Meanwhile, BJP leaders have been criticized for their lack of quick responses to attacks on Fadnavis and for addressing internal issues publicly rather than within party forums.

Fadnavis' previous achievements include leading the BJP to its highest-ever tally in the 2014 Assembly elections, where the party won 122 out of 288 seats. However, the upcoming Assembly elections present a new set of challenges as the party aligns with Shinde and Pawar, who have joined the government after splitting from the Shiv Sena and NCP respectively, as per media reports.

Despite the hurdles, Fadnavis has been vocal about his commitment to securing a BJP victory in the Assembly polls. During a recent tour of Vidarbha, he urged party leaders to avoid complacency and reaffirmed his dedication to regaining power. The BJP's current position is precarious as it prepares for the Assembly polls.

The party faces the challenge of addressing internal issues while empowering its leadership to ensure a unified and effective campaign. The central BJP leadership's focus on Maharashtra underscores the importance of the state in the party's broader national strategy. The BJP will need to navigate these challenges carefully to maintain its position and achieve success in the upcoming elections.
