Deepak Kesarkar: The Leader Reshaping Shiv Sena's Stronghold in Konkan

In the vibrant journey of Shiv Sena, several people have come together to strengthen the organisation, expand its influence, and keep its opponents on their toes. Among the prominent leaders in Konkan who have bolstered Shiv Sena's presence is Maharashtra's School Education Minister, Deepak Kesarkar.

Hailing from a well-established family in Sawantwadi, Kesarkar built his reputation as a conscientious public servant through roles as a councilor and chairman. Known for his composed and cultured demeanor, Kesarkar first contested the Maharashtra state assembly election in 2009 on a Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) ticket. His victory came at a time when Narayan Rane held an unchallenged grip over the Sindhudurg district. However, Kesarkar soon emerged as an opponent to Rane's dominance.

This shift sent ripples through Konkan's political landscape, marking Kesarkar as one of the few to openly confront Rane's regional stronghold. Backed by Shiv Sena, Kesarkar resisted multiple attempts by senior NCP leaders, including Sharad Pawar, to bridge the divide between him and Rane. However, Kesarkar's resolve held firm, eventually leading him to join the Shiv Sena.

In a public face-off during a District Planning Committee meeting, Kesarkar made a bold statement directed at Rane, who was then the Guardian Minister: "One day, I will sit in the same chair you occupy." Soon after, his forecast came to fruition when Kesarkar won the 2014 state assembly election from Sawantwadi, following which he was inducted into Devendra Fadnavis's cabinet as Minister of State and later took on responsibilities as Guardian Minister of Sindhudurg.

Growing Regional Influence

In the 2019 elections, Kesarkar secured another assembly term with a Shiv Sena ticket but did not join the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) cabinet. His political trajectory took another turn when he aligned with Eknath Shinde's faction during a leadership shift within Shiv Sena. While initially attempting to mediate between Shinde and Uddhav Thackeray, he ultimately joined the Shinde camp, where his diplomatic and steady communication style earned him the role of spokesperson. Shinde later entrusted Kesarkar with the School Education Minister portfolio, also appointing him Guardian Minister of Mumbai.

Local Developments Boost Kesarkar's Standing

Kesarkar's focus on development is evident in Sawantwadi, where he led the beautification of Moti Lake, transforming it into a prominent attraction for both locals and tourists. His initiative in constructing a suspension bridge connecting Vengurla port to Navabag Beach has drawn thousands of visitors, generating significant local employment.

In a separate drive for economic growth, Kesarkar has been instrumental in reviving the Aadali MIDC in Dodamarg, aiming to attract investment and create 500 local jobs through discussions with entrepreneurs.

Kesarkar's dedication to his constituency extends to sports infrastructure, with sports complexes established in Sawantwadi and Dodamarg under his initiative, providing local athletes a space to train and compete. A submarine project in Vengurla is also underway, enhancing his contributions to the area's tourism and economic prospects.

Kesarkar's tactful and respectful approach has won him considerable goodwill in his constituency. Free from controversy, he has built a reputation as a respected figure, which analysts believe gives him a strong edge in Sawantwadi's upcoming elections. The recent alliance with Narayan Rane's support base only strengthens his prospects, making him a formidable contender in the Konkan region.
