Chhagan Bhujbal Left Out Of Fadnavis’ Cabinet: Maharashtra’s Surprising Political Shake-Up
In a surprising political move, the ruling Mahayuti government in Maharashtra reshuffled its Cabinet on Sunday, with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis unveiling his new team of 39 ministers.
The rejig has made headlines not just for its new faces but also for the omission of 12 senior ministers from the previous government, including key names like Chhagan Bhujbal of the NCP and senior BJP leaders Sudhir Mungantiwar and Ravindra Chavan, as reported by Times Now.

Chhagan Bhujbal: A Major Miss
Chhagan Bhujbal, a veteran leader from the NCP led by Ajit Pawar, was expected to be a frontrunner for a Cabinet position given his stature as a seven-time MLA and his significant influence as a prominent OBC leader in Maharashtra. Bhujbal has been a part of the state Cabinet since 1999, barring a hiatus during Fadnavis' first term (2014-2019) when he faced a 26-month jail term due to a money-laundering probe.
Despite Mahayuti's strong performance in the recent elections, Bhujbal's omission stems from a mix of political opposition and internal dissent within his party ranks. Leaders, including those from his own NCP, reportedly opposed his nomination, particularly in his home turf of Nashik, where his leadership style faced criticism, as reported by Indian Express.
Adding to Bhujbal's woes was his decision to field his nephew, Sameer Bhujbal, as a rebel candidate against Shiv Sena MLA Suhas Kande in Nandgaon. This move strained his ties further with the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, a critical ally in the Mahayuti coalition.
A Strategic Reshuffle by Fadnavis
The reshuffling of the Maharashtra Cabinet marks a significant political recalibration. Fadnavis and the Mahayuti leadership appear to have prioritized fresh faces over seniority while addressing internal power struggles and coalition dynamics. Bhujbal, despite his decades-long experience and clout, became a casualty of these considerations.
Looking Ahead
While Bhujbal's exclusion has sparked discussions about political equations within the Mahayuti alliance, it remains to be seen how this reshuffle will impact the coalition's unity and performance in the months ahead. For now, the new Cabinet represents a blend of continuity and change, with Devendra Fadnavis signalling a new phase of governance for Maharashtra.
