BMC To Collect Sanitary And Medical Waste Separately From May 1; Check What Goes In The Yellow Bag

From May 1, people living in Mumbai will be able to separate their sanitary and medical waste using special yellow bags, as part of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's new initiative called 'Domestic Sanitary and Special Care Waste Collection'.

What Is the Initiative About?

BMC To Collect Sanitary And Medical Waste

According to a Hindustan Times report, this new service is meant to collect personal waste items such as:

  • Sanitary pads and tampons
  • Baby and adult diapers
  • Expired medicines
  • Used syringes and needles
  • Cotton swabs, bandages, and PPE kits
  • Waste from beauty parlours, like waxing strips

These items are considered potentially harmful, and proper handling is necessary to avoid health risks.

Who Can Take Part?

The following groups can register for the service:

  • Housing societies
  • Residential complexes
  • Women's hostels
  • Beauty parlours
  • Educational institutions

Once registered, they will be provided with yellow-coloured waste bags to collect the specific items mentioned above.

Why Is It Important?

According to Kiran Dighavkar, Deputy Commissioner (Solid Waste Management), Mumbai generates 7,000 to 8,000 tonnes of solid waste every day. Out of this, around 70 to 80 tonnes is sanitary and special care waste. These waste materials need to be separated and treated properly, as they may contain harmful bacteria or chemicals.

What Will BMC Do?

To support the new initiative, the BMC will run awareness campaigns across the city. These campaigns will:

1. Educate people about proper waste segregation
2. Guide participating organisations on how to use the yellow bags
3. Promote safe handling and environment-friendly disposal of such waste

A Step Towards Cleaner And Safer Mumbai

The main goal of this effort is to protect health and the environment by making sure that dangerous waste is not mixed with regular garbage. If handled incorrectly, such waste can spread diseases and pose a risk to waste collectors and the public.

This is an important step for Mumbai towards improving hygiene and waste management, and the BMC hopes that more people and establishments will join in and support the effort.
