BMC Lottery Decides: Next Mumbai Mayor to Be Woman from General Category

Mumbai is set to get a woman mayor from the General category, after a reservation lottery fixed leadership for all 29 municipal corporations in Maharashtra. The outcome has already triggered political anger, with the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) alleging bias in the allocation.

The Urban Development Department conducted the lottery to assign reservation categories for each civic body's top post for the coming term. Through this draw, officials decided which categories, such as General, OBC, SC or ST, would occupy mayoral positions in every corporation.

Shiv Sena (UBT) leaders questioned why Mumbai's Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation mayoral seat went again to the General category. The faction argued that the rotation principle should have moved the post to OBC or another reserved group, instead of repeating a General category allocation for India's financial capital.

The party also highlighted expectations within its ranks for an ST mayor in Mumbai this year. However, officials pointed to legal norms that bar such an outcome under present conditions. Existing rules link the mayoral reservation to how many seats each category holds in that corporation.

Under the current framework, a corporation with three or fewer ST-reserved seats cannot earmark its mayoral post for the ST category. Mumbai has only two such seats out of 227, so an ST mayor is barred by these norms, officials stressed while explaining the draw.

Frustrated by what it termed irregularities in the selection pattern, Shiv Sena (UBT) boycotted the reservation lottery process. Despite the protests and walkout, the final notified list stands, confirming that Mumbai will be led by a woman mayor from the General category during the next term.
