BMC Elctions Exit Poll of Polls Suggests BJP–Shiv Sena Lead in Mumbai Civic Body Elections

A combined reading of exit polls for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections suggests that the ruling Mahayuti alliance is firmly positioned to retain control of India's richest civic body. While individual surveys differ slightly in their estimates, the overall direction across pollsters points to a decisive advantage for the BJP-Shiv Sena combine, placing it comfortably above the majority mark in Mumbai's 227-member civic house.

The Axis My India exit poll projects the Mahayuti alliance securing around 141 seats, while the JVC survey estimates a tally of approximately 138 wards. When these projections are viewed together, the poll-of-polls places the ruling bloc in a likely range of 138 to 141 seats. This would give Mahayuti a margin well beyond the simple majority threshold of 114 seats required to form the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation.

By comparison, the opposition Shiv Sena (UBT)-MNS alliance led by Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray appears set for a distant second place. Exit poll estimates put the alliance's seat share between 59 and 63 wards. Despite the political symbolism of the Thackeray cousins sharing a platform after nearly two decades, the combined survey data indicates that the alliance has not been able to significantly dent the ruling bloc's support base across the city.

Party-wise projections within the exit polls also point to a strong showing by the Bharatiya Janata Party on its own. One assessment suggests the BJP could emerge as the single largest party in the BMC with around 138 seats, while Shiv Sena (UBT) is projected to win close to 59 wards and the Congress around 23. Smaller parties and independent candidates are expected to share the remaining seats, limiting their influence in the formation of the civic body.

The poll-of-polls analysis comes amid a charged political atmosphere, with polling day marked by debates over voter turnout, allegations surrounding the indelible ink used during voting, and sharp exchanges between the ruling alliance and opposition leaders. Despite these controversies, the consistency across exit poll findings suggests that Mahayuti has managed to consolidate its position in Mumbai ahead of the final count.

The BMC election is being closely watched as a critical political test, particularly for the Shiv Sena (UBT), which once dominated the civic body for over two decades. For the BJP and the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, a victory would signal continued dominance in urban Maharashtra and strengthen their claim over Mumbai's governance and development agenda.

With voting concluded across 29 municipal corporations in Maharashtra, attention now turns to January 16, when counting will take place. The final results will determine whether the exit poll trend holds and confirm which alliance will control the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation for the next term.
