BEST Bus Services Hit Hard As Workers Strike Over Alleged Mistreatment Of Pregnant Conductor

BEST bus services have been severely affected this morning, following a flash strike by workers from the wet lease company Mateshwari Urban Transport at the Sion Pratiksha Nagar and Dharavi bus depots. The sudden strike has left commuters frustrated, with services becoming unpredictable.

The immediate cause of the strike appears to be an incident involving the mistreatment of a pregnant lady bus conductor. Reports indicate that the conductor, who is in the advanced stage of pregnancy, requested lighter duties from her manager. However, her request was denied, and she was allegedly insulted. This incident led to protests by other workers, causing the flash strike.

In addition to this issue, workers are also unhappy with delayed and insufficient salaries. Bus conductors and drivers have complained that their salaries are often not paid on time, further contributing to the discontent. Many workers are also demanding to be hired as permanent staff, as opposed to their current status under the wet lease agreement.

The workers involved in the strike are employed by Mateshwari Urban Transport, which operates in several areas of Mumbai, including Santacruz, Majas, Wadala, Mulund, Dharavi, and Sion Pratiksha Nagar. These workers have previously raised concerns about low wages and poor working conditions at the bus depots.

In response to the situation, the BEST undertaking has stated that it will penalise contractors and impose fines for non-compliance with employment standards. However, there has been no official statement regarding when the strike might end or when normal services will resume.

Commuters, who once relied on the trusted and reliable services of BEST, are now facing an unpredictable disruption in their daily commutes. The outcome of the strike remains uncertain, and the situation is likely to escalate unless the issues are addressed promptly.
