Badlapur Station News: New Barricades Spark Confusion, Passengers Demand Action
A day after Central Railway (CR) barricaded Platform 1 at Badlapur station, confusion and frustration erupted among passengers on Monday, according to a Hindustan Times (HT) report. What was intended to reduce congestion at the station led to overcrowding and chaos on Platform 2.
Commuters, who had previously been able to board and alight from trains on both sides of Platform 1 and 1A, were faced with barricades blocking one side. This change created significant inconvenience, especially for those traveling to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT). Shweta Roy, a daily commuter on the 9 am train, described the scene to the HT, saying, "When the train arrived, most of it extended beyond the home platform, causing chaos. Women were pushed, and those trying to alight had no space."

Angry passengers expressed their dissatisfaction, claiming that railway officials should have been on-site to witness the consequences of the decision. "The earlier arrangement allowed passengers to board Karjat-bound trains comfortably up until Badlapur. With the island platform now closed, this has deprived passengers of an important amenity," said Prafulla Shewale, head of the Kalyan-Kasara-Karjat Railway Passengers' Association.
The northern areas of Kalyan are rapidly growing, and with more people relying on trains, the number of commuters has been steadily rising. From the passengers' point of view, the installation of barricades has only created more problems.
However, railway officials and the Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC) defended the move, stating that the barricades were part of a long-term plan to expand Badlapur station. An MRVC official explained in the same report, "There was no problem at Badlapur station due to the barricading. This was a necessary step for the future development of the station."
Central Railway officials further clarified that the public had been informed about the construction of the home platform a few months ago. "It was necessary to barricade this platform to create space for the construction of a Foot Over Bridge (FOB) and escalator landings. In the long run, this will help ease crowding at Badlapur," said a CR official, as per the HT report.
The installation of the metal fencing took place on Saturday night during a six-hour block. The fencing was set up to separate platforms 1 and 1A, with tracks in between. Previously, commuters had been boarding trains heading to Karjat on the island platform, but now, with the new barricades in place, the arrangement has caused more disruptions.
While the expansion of Badlapur station is seen as a step towards improving the station's capacity in the future, commuters are hoping that these changes will soon lead to smoother operations and better management of the growing passenger load.
