Are You Paying Extra for Porters? Railway Screens Now Show Porter Rates – Know The Right Price Before You Pay
Western Railway has taken a major step to improve passenger convenience by displaying official Porter service rates on digital screens at key stations, including Mumbai Central Terminus. This initiative aims to prevent passengers from being overcharged for porter services, as per a Lokmat report. With this measure, travellers can check the fixed rates before hiring a porter. The system will be gradually introduced across all railway stations.
The digital display screens, which are already used for railway-related updates and advertisements, now show official Porter tariffs. This ensures greater transparency and helps passengers avoid being charged unfairly. If a porter asks for more than the approved rate, passengers can immediately check the official pricing on the screen. Those who feel they are being overcharged can also file an official complaint.
Digital Displays Enhance Revenue Transparency
Apart from assisting passengers, the Railway has also leveraged these digital screens for revenue generation. A five-year agreement has been signed to display advertisements, generating substantial income for the Railways.
For instance, 44 digital screens have been installed at Mumbai Central Station alone, contributing Rs 41 lakh annually and Rs 2.2 crore over five years. The initiative has been widely implemented, with around 1,100 stations now equipped with digital displays. These screens collectively occupy approximately 2,200 square feet of space.
This approach benefits both passengers and the Railways. While travellers can access essential information and fair pricing for services, the Railway earns revenue through advertising, ensuring financial sustainability. The initiative reflects Western Railway's commitment to enhancing passenger experience while maintaining a transparent and efficient system.
With further expansion planned, passengers across the railway network can expect improved services and better accessibility to important information in the coming months.
