Andheri Gokhale Bridge Delayed Again: Work Incomplete Even After Revised Deadline
The second girder of Andheri's Gokhale Bridge has been lowered to a large extent, but the task remained unfinished by Saturday, as per the Mid-day report. According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), 5.5 metres out of the total 6.8 metres of lowering had been completed by Saturday morning. The remaining work is expected to be finished by Monday morning.
This delay follows the failure to meet the initial deadline of November 14. After missing this target, the BMC set a new deadline of November 30. However, when Mid-day visited the site on Saturday, it was found that about 1.5 metres of lowering was still required.
The girder was moved from the East side of Andheri station to the West side, where it is being lowered to a height of 7.5 metres to match the first girder. The work had not even begun by the original November 14 deadline, which caused significant delays. It was only after the Mid-day report highlighted the issue that work began.
A BMC official clarified in the report that, "On Friday night, 900 millimetres of lowering was completed, and the remaining 1.375 metres will be done for bearing placement. This will likely be finished on Saturday and Sunday night." The final placement of the girder is expected to be complete by Monday.
The BMC has set a new deadline of April 2025 for the entire bridge's completion, which includes asphalting the second girder and finishing the approach roads on both sides. A BMC official stated that the bridge will be ready before the monsoon season, giving residents some reassurance that the project will be completed on time.
