Supporting Artisans in Agarbatti Production Through Gramodyog Vikas Yojana Initiative
The Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) has introduced a new initiative to support artisans in Agarbatti production and enhance village industries under the 'Gramodyog Vikas Yojana.' Initially, four pilot projects will be launched, including one in the North-East. Each artisan cluster will receive around 50 Automatic Agarbatti making machines and 10 Mixing machines, totalling 200 Automatic Agarbatti machines and 40 Mixing machines.

In a recent statement, the ministry highlighted that moving 'Agarbatti' from "Free" to "Restricted" trade in the import policy, along with increasing import duty on 'round bamboo sticks' from 10% to 25%, aims to boost local Agarbatti production. This change is expected to create rural jobs and reduce Agarbatti imports by bridging the gap between domestic production and demand.
The Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC), operating under the MSME ministry, will play a crucial role by providing training and Agarbatti manufacturing machines to artisans. KVIC plans to collaborate with reputable Khadi institutions and Agarbatti manufacturers across India to supply work and raw materials to these artisans.
This programme is anticipated to revitalise Agarbatti manufacturing in rural areas, creating at least 500 new jobs immediately. The ministry's statement emphasised that this initiative will serve as a catalyst for reviving small-town and village industries.
The government’s decision aims to enhance indigenous production capabilities while reducing reliance on imports. By supporting local artisans with necessary equipment and training, the programme seeks to strengthen the rural economy through increased employment opportunities.
Overall, this initiative represents a significant step towards empowering rural artisans involved in Agarbatti production. By providing essential resources and support, it aims to foster sustainable growth within village industries while addressing the demand-supply gap in the domestic market.
