PM Vishwakarma Scheme: Comprehensive Support for India's Traditional Artisans and Craftspeople
The PM Vishwakarma Scheme, initiated on 17 September 2023, aims to empower India's traditional artisans and craftspeople. Under the Ministry of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME), this Central Sector Scheme offers comprehensive support to individuals in 18 trades. These include carpenters, boat makers, blacksmiths, locksmiths, goldsmiths, potters, sculptors, cobblers, masons, doll and toy makers, barbers, garland makers, washermen, tailors, fishing net makers, and others.

Artisans can apply online for the scheme through a straightforward process. They need to register by entering their mobile number and completing Aadhaar e-KYC. The registration form requires details such as Aadhaar Card, Voter ID Card, Proof of Occupation, Mobile Number, Bank Account Details, Income Certificate, and Caste Certificate. After submission, applicants receive an application ID to track their status.
Once enrolled in the scheme, beneficiaries undergo a three-step verification process. This includes verification at the Gram Panchayat or Urban Local Body level. The District Implementation Committee then vets and recommends applications before final approval by the Screening Committee. This ensures that only eligible artisans benefit from the scheme.
One of the significant benefits of the PM Vishwakarma Scheme is the provision of a PM Vishwakarma Certificate and ID Card. This recognition enhances the credibility of artisans. Additionally, basic training sessions lasting 5-7 days are provided to impart essential skills specific to each trade. A further 15-day advanced training focuses on innovative techniques to help artisans create higher-value products.
The government provides a daily stipend of Rs.500 during training sessions to cover costs incurred by artisans. Eligible participants also receive e-vouchers worth up to Rs.15,000 for purchasing essential tools and equipment related to their trade. These measures aim to enhance skill levels and market accessibility for traditional craftsmen.
Artisans can access collateral-free loans up to Rs. 3 lakh under this scheme. Loans are disbursed in two installments: Rs. 1 lakh initially and Rs. 2 lakh subsequently at a reduced interest rate of 5%. The government subsidizes 8% interest on these loans to lower costs and promote long-term growth for artisans.
Financial Support and Market Access
To encourage digital transactions and cashless payments, artisans receive Re 1 for every digital transaction they make—up to 100 transactions monthly. The National Committee for Marketing (NCM) supports artisans in quality certification, branding, e-commerce participation in trade fairs, and advertising to expand their reach both domestically and internationally.
The scheme has seen significant progress since its launch as reported on the Pradhan Mantri Vishwakarma portal. Approximately 2.58 crore applications have been submitted so far with over 23.97 lakh artisans successfully registered after verification processes were completed.
Achievements and Progress
Nearly 10 lakh artisans have received e-vouchers worth up to Rs.15,000 enabling them to purchase modern tools for their trade. Additionally, loans totaling Rs. 551.80 crore have been approved for 56,526 applicants with subsidized interest rates at 5%, providing substantial support for those looking to expand their businesses.
The PM Vishwakarma Scheme is making strides in supporting traditional artisans across India by enhancing skills through training programs while providing financial assistance through loans and e-vouchers—all aimed at improving market access both locally and internationally.
