GST Council Meeting on June 29 Brings Major Changes for Indian MSMEs and Taxpayers
The GST Council meeting on June 29 brought significant changes for Indian MSMEs and taxpayers. The government has extended the Rs. 40 lakh threshold exemption for intra-state sales and the Rs. 1.5 crore threshold under the composition scheme to online sellers. This move is seen as a major relief for MSMEs, enabling them to access e-commerce platforms more easily.
Online business modes have become increasingly popular post-pandemic, proving beneficial for entrepreneurs. The GST Council's decision will help more sellers transition from offline to online platforms. This shift is expected to boost the MSME sector significantly, allowing it to tap into the growing digital market.
Taxpayers will also benefit from the GST Council's recent decisions. The council has waived the requirement for filing refund claims by condoning the two-year period between March 1, 2020, and February 28, 2022. This measure aims to alleviate some of the burdens faced by taxpayers due to the pandemic's impact on the economy.
However, not all changes are favourable for citizens. The government has increased the tax rate on certain household goods and services from 12% to 18%. This decision is likely to strain household budgets further amid ongoing inflation concerns, affecting common citizens' daily expenses.
The rise in tax rates on essential goods and services comes at a time when inflation is already a concern for many households. This increase will likely lead to higher costs for everyday items, putting additional pressure on family finances across India.

Overall, while the GST Council's decisions provide relief for MSMEs and some taxpayers, they also introduce challenges for ordinary citizens facing increased living costs. Balancing these outcomes will be crucial as India navigates its economic recovery post-pandemic.
