Government Initiatives to Simplify Micro-Credit for Street Vendors in 2023
The government plans to intensify its efforts to offer micro-credit facilities ranging from Rs 3,000 to Rs 5,000 to street vendors in 2023. Union IT and Telecom Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted this initiative at the Digital India Awards. The focus will be on utilising digital technologies to simplify the credit process for these vendors.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has earmarked approximately Rs 52,000 crore to extend 4G and 5G services nationwide. This investment aims to ensure every citizen is digitally connected, reaching even the most remote areas. Vaishnaw emphasised the importance of this initiative in bridging the digital divide across the country.
The rollout of domestically developed 4G and 5G technologies is expected this year. This move aligns with PM Modi's vision of making India self-sufficient in technology. Vaishnaw mentioned that an electronic chip manufacturing plant would soon be established, further supporting this goal of technological independence.
The PM Street Vendor's Atma Nirbhar Nidhi (SVANidhi) Scheme was introduced in June 2020. It provides micro-credit facilities to help street vendors recover from losses due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The scheme offers affordable, collateral-free loans, empowering vendors to rebuild their businesses.
"In 2023 there will be a big focus on providing credit facilities to street vendors in a simplified manner to meet small credit requirements of Rs 3,000-5,000," stated Vaishnaw. This initiative aims to address the financial needs of street vendors effectively.

These developments reflect a broader strategy to enhance digital infrastructure and support small businesses. By focusing on both technological advancements and financial inclusion, the government seeks to foster economic growth and resilience among street vendors and other small enterprises.
