West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to Engage with Over 12,000 Traders at Byabasayi Sammelan 2025
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is set to engage with over 12,000 traders at the 'Byabasayi Sammelan 2025' on December 17. This event is crucial for reaching out to the state's MSME-driven trading community before the assembly elections next year. A business meeting is also planned for December 18, replacing the usual two-day international business summit due to the upcoming polls.

The 'Byabasayi Sammelan 2025' holds importance as the state government aims to gather support from various sectors, including small businesses, ahead of the 2026 assembly elections. The Confederation of West Bengal Trade Associations (CWBTA) president, Sushil Poddar, highlighted that this event offers a platform for Banerjee to connect with numerous small traders who are vital to Bengal's supply chain.
In West Bengal, traders provide livelihood opportunities for over one crore people, both directly and indirectly. Poddar expressed anticipation for the chief minister to address priorities related to ease of doing business and tackle ground-level challenges. The state has approximately 60-65 lakh traders, including those in the unorganised sector, who are essential in facilitating goods movement and supporting MSMEs.
The CWBTA noted that these traders also play a significant role in linking Bengal with neighbouring markets and contribute to cross-border commerce with Bangladesh, Nepal, and Bhutan. The 'Byabasayi Sammelan' will focus on modernising trade infrastructure, removing obstacles, and enhancing government-industry coordination.
Delegations from all 23 districts, including key commercial hubs and border trade points, are expected to participate in the event. The CWBTA, which represents over 100 associations and around 10 lakh traders, will present its vision for promoting trade-led growth during the event. Poddar emphasised that this gathering aims to strengthen ties between the government and industry stakeholders.
The absence of the usual international business summit this year underscores the significance of these events in fostering dialogue between industry representatives and government officials. By focusing on local traders and their concerns, the state government seeks to consolidate its support base ahead of crucial elections.
This strategic engagement with traders reflects an effort to address their needs and ensure their continued contribution to West Bengal's economy. As the state gears up for elections, such initiatives are vital in maintaining strong relationships with key economic players.
