Yogi Adityanath Government Clears 500-Bed Super-Specialty Hospital to Strengthen Healthcare in Varanasi

Uttar Pradesh will soon add a major public health facility, as the Yogi Adityanath cabinet clears a 500-bed super-specialty hospital in Varanasi. The project will upgrade Shri Shivprasad Gupta (SSPG) Divisional Hospital, located in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s parliamentary constituency, into a large referral centre expected to serve patients from Varanasi and wider eastern Uttar Pradesh.

The decision comes from a cabinet meeting held under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, where the Medical Education Department’s proposal received approval. Officials state that the new super-specialty hospital will increase access to advanced treatment for lakhs of residents in Varanasi and neighbouring Purvanchal districts, which currently depend heavily on a few large hospitals.

Health and Medical Education Department Additional Chief Secretary Amit Kumar Ghosh said the Union government has sanctioned Rs 315.48 crore under the National Health Mission for the hospital. By integrating treatment, training and research under one roof, the redevelopment of SSPG Divisional Hospital is projected to generate skilled healthcare jobs locally while reducing patient outflow to Lucknow, Delhi and other metropolitan centres.
