The move comes alongside a decision to make vocational education compulsory for students in Classes 9 and 11, signalling a stronger focus on practical learning and employability.
Vocational Education Now Mandatory in Classes 9 and 11
Under the new directive, every school will be required to offer at least two vocational courses. Institutions must appoint two instructors using their own resources, while subject experts from the board will define the eligibility criteria for these positions. Schools are expected to receive detailed guidelines regarding instructor qualifications soon.
The vocational curriculum has been developed in collaboration with Pandit Sundarlal Sharma Central Institute of Vocational Education, Bhopal. Designed around current technological demands and industry expectations, the courses emphasise hands-on training, skill development, and job readiness.
According to UP Board Secretary Bhagwati Singh, "This step is an important effort towards linking school education with employment, providing practical knowledge to students, and preparing them for future challenges."
Schools to Choose Subjects Based on Geographic Relevance
Schools will select vocational subjects based on their geographic context to help students connect with local industries. For example, institutions in Bhadohi may introduce training linked to the region's well-known carpet industry.
To deepen industry exposure, the programme also mandates a 10-day internship at relevant industrial establishments, ensuring students gain real-world experience alongside classroom learning.
108 New Courses Introduced to Boost Employability
In a significant expansion, the board plans to roll out 108 new vocational courses simultaneously for Classes 9 and 11. Emerging fields such as Artificial Intelligence, aerospace, media, and auto service technician programmes will be part of the offering.
The initiative aligns with the vision of the National Education Policy 2020, aiming to encourage students to pursue skill-oriented education while enhancing their employment prospects after schooling.
