Pankaj Chaudhary, Kurmi Leader and PM Modi's Aide, Poised to Become UP BJP President

Veteran BJP leader and Union Minister Pankaj Chaudhary is all set to take charge as the new president of the Bharatiya Janata Party's Uttar Pradesh unit, with his election virtually confirmed after the nomination process concluded on Saturday without any contest.

The formal announcement is expected on Sunday, sealing his unopposed rise to the key organisational post.

Consensus Candidate Backed by Top Leadership

Chaudhary will replace senior leader Chaudhary Bhupendra Singh as the BJP's state president. Party insiders say the absence of rival nominations reflects a clear consensus within both the state and central leadership. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath proposed Chaudhary's name, while Deputy Chief Ministers Keshav Prasad Maurya and Brajesh Pathak seconded it, signalling strong backing from the highest levels.

Several prominent BJP leaders also extended their support, including former Union Minister Smriti Irani, senior leaders Suresh Khanna and Swatantra Dev Singh, along with Surya Pratap Shahi and Baby Rani Maurya.

Gratitude Message to Party Workers

After arriving in Lucknow, the Union Minister of State for Finance expressed his appreciation for the reception he received from party members. In a social media post, he said, "Upon arriving at Lucknow airport today, I received a warm welcome from the dedicated party workers. I express my heartfelt gratitude to all the workers for the affection and respect they showed me."

The BJP's central election officer and Union Minister Piyush Goyal is expected to formally announce the new state president on Sunday.

Strategic Importance Ahead of Key Elections

Political observers believe Chaudhary's appointment carries added weight with the panchayat polls and the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections on the horizon. Organisational reach, regional balance and caste dynamics are seen as crucial considerations behind the decision.

A seven time Member of Parliament from Maharajganj, Chaudhary belongs to the Kurmi community, classified under the Other Backward Classes. He is widely regarded as a trusted aide of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

Kurmi Representation and BJP's Electoral Calculus

The Kurmi community holds significant influence within Uttar Pradesh's OBC electorate. In recent contests, including the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and the 2022 Assembly polls, sections of the community were perceived to be leaning towards the Samajwadi Party, adding political significance to the BJP's leadership choice.

The party has a history of appointing Kurmi leaders as its Uttar Pradesh unit president, with former MP Vinay Katiyar, former minister Om Prakash Singh and Swatantra Dev Singh having held the post in the past.
