CM Yogi Adityanath Inaugurates East Zone Inter-University Women’s Basketball Championship

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath officially inaugurated the East Zone Inter-University Women's Basketball Championship this Friday at Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gorakhpur University. The event marks a significant return for high-level collegiate athletics to the region, as the university hosts this prestigious competition after a six-year hiatus.

A Legacy of Excellence
In his keynote address, Chief Minister Adityanath drew a powerful parallel between the discipline of sports and the region's rich historical legacy. He paid tribute to revolutionary icons like Pandit Ram Prasad Bismil and Shaheed Bandhu Singh, noting that Gorakhpur has long been a "workplace" for great minds, including the legendary novelist Munshi Premchand.

By rooting the tournament in this historical context, the Chief Minister urged the young athletes to draw inspiration from the grit and determination of the figures who once walked the same soil.

The Rise of a New Sports Culture
The Chief Minister highlighted a dramatic shift in India's athletic landscape over the last decade. He remarked that prior to 2014, sports were often relegated to the sidelines of government policy.

"Over the past 11 years, we have witnessed the birth of a new sports culture," Adityanath stated. He emphasized that athletic competition is now a top-tier priority, supported by robust financial incentives. In a move to bolster local talent, he reaffirmed that the Uttar Pradesh government provides Rs 10 lakh in financial assistance to any athlete from the state who qualifies for the Olympic Games, ensuring that financial barriers do not hinder international success.

Tournament Logistics and Competition
The championship is set to be a grueling five-day test of skill and endurance, featuring 31 university teams from 11 different states. According to Rajveer Singh, Secretary of the University's Sports Council, the tournament structure is designed to maximize competitive play:

Format: The teams are divided into four pools (Pools A, B, and D with eight teams each; Pool C with seven).

Schedule: A total of 30 matches are scheduled, starting with eight matches per day for the first three days.

Officiating: The Uttar Pradesh Basketball Association has deployed 12 expert referees to oversee the proceedings.

The tournament tipped off with an opening clash between Veer Bahadur Singh Purvanchal University (Jaunpur) and Vinoba Bhave University (Hazaribagh). As the competition progresses, the top collegiate athletes from across the East Zone will vie for the championship title, fueled by a renewed state-wide commitment to sporting excellence.
