What Is Afternoon Fatigue? Why Several People Suffers Low Energy?
Many people experience a dip in energy during the afternoon, often feeling tired or sleepy. This phenomenon is known as "afternoon fatigue" or the "mid-day slump." It typically occurs when the body's energy levels drop, making a nap seem appealing. Science explains this as a normal physiological response.
Two main factors contribute to this afternoon tiredness: circadian rhythm and sleep pressure. The circadian rhythm is the body's internal clock that regulates changes in physical, mental, and behavioural patterns over 24 hours. It determines when we should be awake or asleep.

Understanding Circadian Rhythm and Sleep Pressure
Sleep pressure refers to the body's increasing need for sleep the longer we stay awake. It's lowest in the morning when we're refreshed but builds up throughout the day. Dr. Ravi Allada from the Michigan Neuroscience Institute explains that during the afternoon slump, sleep pressure and circadian rhythms are at odds.
This clash between sleep pressure and circadian rhythm can make us feel drowsy. When sleep pressure wins over, it leads to that familiar afternoon fatigue. Lack of sleep or irregular sleep schedules can worsen this energy dip.
Impact of Diet on Afternoon Fatigue
While food doesn't directly cause afternoon fatigue, consuming sugary foods and refined carbohydrates can exacerbate feelings of lethargy. These foods may intensify the energy slump by affecting blood sugar levels.
To combat this, consider replacing sugary breakfast items with healthier options like whole grain oatmeal or eggs. Such choices can help maintain steady energy levels throughout the day.
Strategies to Manage Afternoon Slump
A quick 15-20 minute power nap can provide immediate relief without leaving you groggy. Engaging in small tasks like checking emails or organising routine activities can also help maintain focus during this period.
Incorporating some physical activity, such as a short walk, can boost alertness and concentration. Movement stimulates blood flow and helps counteract feelings of sluggishness.
Afternoon fatigue is a common part of daily life for many people. While it might be mistaken for laziness, it's influenced by factors like sleep deprivation, disrupted sleep cycles, and carbohydrate-rich diets.
Understanding these underlying causes allows individuals to better manage their energy levels throughout the day and improve overall productivity and well-being.
