Vivah Panchami: Celebrating the Sacred Union of Lord Rama and Goddess Sita
Vivah Panchami, also known as Sita Vivah, is a revered Hindu festival. It commemorates the divine wedding of Lord Rama and Goddess Sita. Celebrated on the Panchami of the Shukla Paksha in the Hindu month of Margashirsha, this festival holds great significance. It is especially popular in the Mithilanchal region and parts of North India. Janakpur in Nepal also observes this day with great fervour.
In Hindu scriptures like the Ramayana, Vivah Panchami is considered sacred. Lord Rama, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, married Princess Sita on this day. The event took place in Janakpur, where Lord Rama broke Lord Shiva's bow during Swayamvara. This divine wedding is celebrated annually to honour their union.

On Vivah Panchami, temples are adorned with flowers and lamps. The divine wedding ceremony of Lord Rama and Goddess Sita is enacted at many places. A grand procession moves from one temple to another, ending with a magnificent wedding ceremony in the evening. The idols are dressed as bridegroom and bride.
The celebrations are known as Ram Vivah Utsav. Devotees sing devotional songs praising Lord Rama and Goddess Sita throughout the day. Stage shows and cultural programmes are organised, including Ramleela performances depicting their life.
Special puja and rituals are performed in temples like Dashrath, Ram, and Janki temples. Celebrations last for seven days with immense zeal. Devotees visit these temples seeking blessings for a happy family life. Rituals include holy baths in Mithilanchal lakes like Dhanushsagar and Gangasagar.
Traditional Attire and Food
During Vivah Panchami, people wear traditional attire to participate in the festivities. The food prepared is Satvik, aligning with the spiritual nature of the celebration. This includes dishes that are pure and vegetarian, enhancing the sacredness of the occasion.
