Vaishakha Purnima 2024: Significance

Lord Buddha or Gautam Buddha was born as Siddhartha Gautam to King Shuddhodhan and his wife Maya in Lumbini, Nepal around 563-562 BC. An astrologer predicted that Siddhartha would renounce everything after detaching himself from worldly desires. The King tried to keep him away from miseries to prevent this.

However, Siddhartha saw four scenes: a suffering common man, an old man, a sick person, a dead body, and an ascetic holy man who was content. These scenes led Siddhartha to renounce his royal life and seek the purpose of life. He gained enlightenment under the Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya, Bihar.
