Sarva Pitru Amavasya: Understanding Rituals And Their Significance
Sarva Pitru Amavasya is a significant Hindu festival observed on 2nd October 2024, a Wednesday. This day is dedicated to paying homage to deceased ancestors. It marks the end of the Pitru Paksha, a 16-day period when it is believed that the souls of ancestors visit the earth. Families perform rituals to ensure these souls attain peace and liberation.
On Sarva Pitru Amavasya, families pay respect to their deceased ancestors. The belief is that during Pitru Paksha, the souls of the deceased visit their family members. To ensure these souls are liberated and attain 'Moksha', Shraddha rituals are performed. These rituals help satisfy the hunger of these souls through 'Pind Daan'.

The rituals on this day are primarily performed by the eldest male member of the family. The person performing the Shraddha takes a holy bath and wears clean clothes, preferably a dhoti and sacred thread (janeyu). A durva grass ring is also worn during the rituals.
Food offerings are made to cows, crows, dogs, and ants. People engage in charitable works by offering food, clothing, and donations to the needy. The rituals involve offering tarpan to deceased family members, followed by pind-daan. Offerings are either immersed in a river or given to a crow.
