Bengaluru Petrol Price Jumps To ₹106: Here’s What Triggered The Fuel Hike

Bengaluru petrol prices have crossed the ₹106 mark again, ending a long phase of nearly stable fuel rates in Karnataka's capital. The sudden increase in petrol and diesel prices on Friday has come amid rising global crude oil costs, geopolitical tensions in West Asia and mounting pressure on state-run oil companies that had been absorbing higher input costs for weeks.

Following the latest revision by public sector oil marketing companies, petrol in Bengaluru is now priced at ₹106 per litre, while diesel has climbed to ₹94.10 per litre. The hike applies across several Indian cities, though final rates differ depending on state taxes and dealer commissions.

Why Petrol And Diesel Prices Increased In Bengaluru

According to officials from oil marketing companies, fuel prices had remained mostly unchanged for several weeks despite international crude oil prices steadily rising in the background. Retailers reportedly continued selling fuel at older rates to shield consumers from frequent price fluctuations.

However, officials said the financial burden eventually became too large to sustain. As global crude prices continued to rise, oil companies were forced to revise petrol and diesel rates to partially recover mounting losses and protect retail margins.

Industry executives also noted that India had managed comparatively stable fuel prices for a longer duration than many countries facing sharp volatility in energy markets.

Global Crude Oil Prices Behind Bengaluru Fuel Hike

The latest increase in Bengaluru fuel prices is closely linked to rising international crude oil prices. Global energy markets have witnessed renewed uncertainty due to escalating tensions in West Asia and concerns surrounding disruptions to major oil supply routes.

One of the biggest concerns remains the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically important shipping corridor through which a large share of the world's crude oil passes. Any threat to movement through the route directly impacts international oil prices and eventually affects fuel costs in oil-importing countries like India.

Experts also point out that fluctuations in the rupee-dollar exchange rate influence domestic fuel prices because crude oil imports are purchased in US dollars.

Why Fuel Prices Differ Across Karnataka

Even though oil companies revise base fuel prices nationally, petrol and diesel rates vary across Bengaluru and other Karnataka cities due to state-level taxes and local levies.

Retail fuel prices include multiple components such as central excise duty, value-added tax (VAT), freight charges and dealer commissions. Since VAT differs from state to state, fuel prices can vary significantly even when crude oil rates remain the same nationwide.

End Of Long Period Of Stable Fuel Prices

The latest revision marks one of the first major fuel price increases after a prolonged period of mostly unchanged rates maintained since April 2022. The only major relief during this period came in March 2024, when petrol and diesel prices were reduced by ₹2 per litre ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.

Earlier, Union petroleum minister Hardeep Singh Puri had indicated that rising global crude oil prices could eventually force authorities to allow higher retail fuel prices to ease pressure on oil companies.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also urged citizens to reduce unnecessary fuel consumption and adopt energy-saving measures such as remote work wherever possible amid changing global energy conditions.
