  • ½ cup pigeon pea (toor dal)
  • 2 cups water
  • 2 handfuls fenugreek leaves (methi)
  • 3 tomatoes
  • 1 large onion
  • Pinch of turmeric powder
  • 1-2 green chillies, sliced
  • 10 whole black peppercorns
  • 1 small dollop of butter
  • 1 small piece of ginger (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons ghee
  • ½ teaspoon mustard seeds
  • ½ teaspoon cumin seeds (zheera)
  • 2 garlic cloves, sliced
  • 2 red chillies
  • 6-8 curry leaves
  • 1 small tomato, finely chopped
  • Salt to taste
  • Chilli powder to taste
  • Ground coriander to taste
  • Lemon juice (a few drops)
Easy Pigeon Pea and Fenugreek Curry Recipe
  • Pressure cooker
  • Pan for frying

Procedure

  1. Add the pigeon peas, water, fenugreek leaves, tomatoes, onion, turmeric powder, green chillies, black peppercorns, butter, and ginger into a pressure cooker.
  2. Cook until the dal is done. This usually takes about four whistles.
  3. In a separate pan, heat the ghee. Add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, garlic slices, red chillies, and curry leaves.
  4. Fry until the garlic turns golden brown.
  5. Add the chopped tomato along with salt, chilli powder, and ground coriander.
  6. Add the cooked dal mixture to this fried mixture. Let it simmer for a few minutes. Add water if you prefer a thinner consistency.
  7. Add a few drops of lemon juice for extra flavour.
  8. Serve hot with rice. You can also add Gongura pickle for an extra zing.
